Lds when is fast sunday

Occasional fasting is good for our bodies and helps our minds become more active. The Savior taught us that purposeful fasting is more than just going without food and drink. We must also concentrate on spiritual matters. Prayer is a necessary part of fasting.

Throughout the scriptures, prayer and fasting are mentioned together. Our fasting should be accompanied by sincere prayer, and we should begin and end our fasting with prayer. Fasting can have many purposes. We can overcome weaknesses or problems by fasting and praying. Sometimes we may wish to fast and pray for help or guidance for others, such as a family member who is ill and needs a blessing see Mosiah — Through fasting we can come to know the truth of things just as did the prophet Alma in the Book of Mormon.

We can fast to help others embrace the truth. Fasting can help comfort us in times of sorrow and mourning see Alma —6. Fasting can help us become humble and feel closer to our Heavenly Father see Helaman Our purpose in fasting should not be to impress others. That is one of the blessings of fasting. Boy: When do we fast? Father: Unless there is a special conference on the first Sunday of the month, Fast Sunday is always held on that day. Fast Sunday is also a time when we share our testimonies. The Spirit of our Heavenly Father always seems to be very close during testimony-bearing time.

Do you think that might be because we are fasting? Boy: Sure. I love testimony meeting. It makes me feel closer to Heavenly Father. But can we fast only on Fast Sunday? When we fast with purpose, we have something to focus our attention on besides our hunger.

The purpose of our fast may be a very personal one. Fasting can help us overcome personal flaws and sins. It can help us overcome our weaknesses—help them become strengths. Fasting can help us become more humble, less prideful, less selfish, and more concerned about the needs of others. It can help us see more clearly our own mistakes and weaknesses and help us be less prone to criticize others. Or our fast may have a focus on a family challenge. A family fast might help increase love and appreciation among family members and reduce the amount of contention in the family, or we might fast as a couple to strengthen our marriage bonds.

Throughout the scriptures the term fasting is usually combined with prayer. Fasting without prayer is just going hungry for 24 hours. But fasting combined with prayer brings increased spiritual power. Let us begin our fasts with prayer. This could be kneeling at the table as we finish the meal with which we begin the fast. That prayer should be a natural thing as we speak to our Heavenly Father concerning the purpose of our fast and plead with Him for His help in accomplishing our goals.

Likewise, let us end our fasts with prayer. We could very appropriately kneel at the table before we sit down to consume the meal with which we break our fast. We would thank the Lord for His help during the fast and for what we have felt and learned from the fast.
