In an age where practicioners of bass-booming dubstep are a dime a dozen, the challenge to stand out is greater than ever. We spoke to the producer about his anonymity, creative choices, and his strange new music video. Is that strategy or a natural inclination? Everything stems from that. So, you know, for me, it's just like, kind of blending those two things together.

It was a wobbly saccharine rush that caught the attention of Drake, who remixed it and subsequently jumped on stage to perform with SBTRKT on his Canadian tour. Tracks like 'Sanctuary' and 'Ready Set Loop' demonstrate Jerome's dab hand at marrying intricate rhythms, percussion and melodies that surge urgently then subside. Whilst lead track 'Heatwave' features layers of clattering, skittering percussion and mournful ' oh-oohs ', like some alchemical process bringing to life a musical Frankenstein.

The sounds of kalimba and glockenspiels feel familiar and bright but teamed with an impatient kick drum and lurking synths, create a desperate tension on 'Hold On'. Sometimes it's a little too smoov — Something Goes Right is like Jamiroquai meets Jean Michel Jarre in dubstep space — and the multiple mood changes can make it seem characterless, but full marks for effort, and good effort for the masks.

He wound up choosing Osea Island, an estuary plot in Essex connected to the mainland by a causeway which can only be crossed at low tide.
